Along a high-visibility 12-mile corridor between Stafford and Fredericksburg, Virginia, Aldridge was contracted by the local utility to replace foundations for a 230kV/115kV double-circuit transmission line. Operating directly adjacent to the Interstate 95 corridor and through active commercial and residential hubs, the project required precise technical execution, strict safety controls, and specialized equipment to deliver work safely in tight right-of-ways.

Site Constraints & Environmental Management

Executing heavy foundation installation along an active transit alignment presented significant site challenges:

  • Overhead Clearance: To prevent additional power outages for the local utility, work had to occur directly beneath live lines.

  • Variable Ground Conditions: Crews encountered drastically shifting subterranean conditions across the 12-mile alignment, ranging from solid rock excavation to low-strength, saturated soils.

  • Environmental Sensitivity: Portions of the project spanned protected wetland areas, requiring specialized work plans and containment protocols to minimize any potential impacts from drilling efforts.

  • High-Visibility Corridor: Working adjacent to heavily populated residential areas and the busy I-95 corridor demanded continuous traffic management, noise mitigation, and tight perimeter security.

Execution & Equipment Strategy

To navigate restricted overhead clearances and changing ground conditions, Aldridge deployed a dedicated equipment fleet featuring low-clearance drill rigs and high-capacity excavation tools. This specialized machinery allowed crews to drill and pour foundations of varying diameters directly beneath energized conductors without sacrificing production speed or safety.

Capitalizing on the personnel and equipment already mobilized in the region, Aldridge was additionally awarded three separate substation projects nearby under a master service agreement with the utility. By coordinating resources across both the transmission alignment and the substation sites, our crews maximized operational efficiency and completed all supplemental scopes on schedule.
