dms sign improvements

Aldridge was the prime contractor on this project to install dynamic messaging system signage along the Illinois Tollway. The work entailed the removal and replacement of ten Dynamic Message Signs throughout seven areas of the I-88 & I-355 Corridor. The locations for these signs ranged from Aurora to Hinsdale along I-88 and from Lisle to Lombard along I-355. The sign removal and installation portion of the work were completed at night with the assistance of a traffic control specialist and the State Police. Traffic along the tollways was completely stopped for 15-minute intervals in order to safely and correctly execute the work. Once the DMS was safely removed and replaced, traffic was allowed to continue in its normal flow.

The ITS work consisted of installing the following: eleven ITS enclosures on existing ITS poles, ten new CCTV cameras, ten ITS fiber optic communication assemblies, and roughly 4,300 LF of new underground conduit from the new DMS controllers to the ITS location along the same corridor. Once the ITS underground conduit was installed, the new power & fiber optic cables were installed and terminated into the main backbone fiber in order to communicate with the Dynamic Message Sign and the new CCTV cameras. This scope of work was all completed during normal daytime working hours at the same seven locations as the Dynamic Message Sign.

Over and above the OSHA and MOT requirements, Aldridge, per corporate policy, provided company-owned attenuator trucks to protect the workers from live traffic at each and every job site location.
